EP Youth Department Nurturing Student Creativity

Creative Hour Program, along with upcoming Creativity Camp, puts the focus on students' hidden talents.

Ms. Pyeisha Allen knows that there is more to the Evergreen Park Youth Department than foosball and video games.

Ms. Pyeisha has served as Director of the Youth Department since 2018. And yes, while the Youth Center is stocked with games and activities of every kind, she continues to develop programs with the intention of discovering the hidden talents of the youths in the community.

“For that reason, our Creative Hours have been a fulfilling success,” Ms. Pyeisha stated. “Creative Hour is a monthly program where students can spend an hour working on a creative project, whether it is a craft, artwork, or a theatrical performance. We try to have a fine balance of these projects so that they might appeal to our kids.”

Next up on the program’s schedule is an afternoon devoted to preparing a Paper Flower Bouquet just in time for Mother’s Day. This event takes place on Thursday, May 8, from 4:30pm to 5:30pm in Room N110 at the Community Center, 3450 W. 95th Street.

“The class is open to students from grades five to twelve, and the low $5 fee includes all the materials you will need, plus a snack to keep your creative energy flowing,” Ms. Pyeisha added. “The class is taught by our staff member Allianna Garcia, who has been wonderful in running several of these classes for the last eight months. Students in the class are learning from a very talented young woman.”

Interested students are asked to register for the class by Tuesday, May 6.

The Youth Department will also offer a full Creativity Camp this summer, again led by Ms. Garcia. The special camp will run for four days (Monday, June 23 through Thursday, June 26) from noon to 1pm in the Youth Center. “We’ll mix it up and create fun and exciting crafts and mini-experiments so that our students can let their creativity shine!”

The cost for that camp is $25 for the full four days, which again includes all materials and snacks.

“In the hot summer days, the students like to have a cool place to go. And the Youth Center is the coolest place around!”

For more information on these programs, the Youth Department can be reached at (708) 229-3377. They also have a Facebook Page (Evergreen Park Youth Department) and an Instagram (epyouthdept). All programs are listed on the village website.
