EPCHS Dance Teams Sweep South Suburban Red Conference Meet

EVERGREEN PARK, IL – The Evergreen Park Community High School Competitive Dance team had a perfect weekend over the three-day Martin Luther King Jr. Day break from school. The squad won first place at both varsity and junior varsity levels at the South Suburban Red conference meet hosted by EPCHS on Saturday.

“I’m so proud of them,” Head Coach Marion Castillo said. “It’s a great honor to see the coaches of other teams appreciate everything we do.”

The Mustang squad of five seniors, four juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen delivered their “Rise and Fall” routine at the conference meet that also included performances from Lemont High School, Oak Forest High School, Reavis High School, Argo Community High School, Bremen High School, Harold L. Richards High School, Hillcrest High School, Oak Lawn Community High School, Alan B. Shepard High School, Dwight D. Eisenhower High School, Tinley Park High School and Thornton Fractional South High School dance teams.

In addition to the competition wins, both the varsity and JV Evergreen Park Mustangs won the sportsmanship awards, and Castillo was voted Coach of the Year.

“It’s more than what the team does” during their routine, Castillo said. “They get up for everyone who wins first, even if it’s not them. They always say ‘good job’ or ‘good luck’ because we are all trying to achieve the same goal.”

Going off the motto “Opportunities don’t happen, you create them,” the Mustangs will continue their season at the sectional meet in Geneva on Saturday. Should they advance there, next up would be the state meet next Friday, January 28, in Bloomington.

“We have a fresh new bunch, and for being such a young team they have really come together as one to do what they need to do,” Castillo said.
