EPCHS Unveils New Third-Floor Training Center

Dist. 231 and elected officials dedicated Evergreen Park Community High School's new training center at an open house.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL — A project that was put on the backburner has been brought to the forefront when Evergreen Park Community High School unveiled its new training center Tuesday, Dec. 19.

The new training center boasts a track and multi-purpose turf area for indoor practice, as well as the latest equipment for building strength and speed. The latest addition utilizes the third floor, which had been closed off and used for storage for 40 years.

“At Evergreen Park Community High School we push wellness for all our students and staff,” Dist. 231 Supt. Tom O’Malley said. “This is a nice enhancement that gives us another space for running different athletic practices and programs. The marching band and color guard can practice there. Staff can get their steps in.”

Most beneficial, having the new training center will keep EPCHS athletes safe while helping them become stronger and faster.

“In the winter, our track students are running the halls that lead to injury,” O’Malley said. “The turf track will protect our students from shin splints.”

The new training center was built with existing capital funds totalling $250,000. The district took advantage of rebate programs by replacing the 1970s-era fluorescent lights with energy-saving LED lighting, including the removal of two-thirds of the existing 500 light fixtures. The bathrooms were also updated to meet ADA standards for accessible design.

“The transformation from a storage area to what it is now is something that we’re excited about and proud of,” O’Malley said. “The turf and track have that new car smell.”

The training center is the latest in Evergreen Park's arsenal of athletic facilities, that includes a new turf baseball and softball field, and acquisition of the former Evergreen Park Bath and Tennis Club, now the EPCHS Sports Complex.
