EVERGREEN PARK, IL -- It’s the end of an era in Evergreen Park as the recreation department shuts off the electricity in the 68-year-old community center and moves into its new digs on Monday. Recreation, youth and senior services are scheduled to begin operations in the new Hamilton B. Maher Community Center located at 97th and Clark.

The state-of-the-art 33,000-square-foot facility features expanded preschool, craft, play, activity and citizens meeting rooms, along with a kitchen, library and reading garden. The building is still in a period of transition, including the phone system, so please make note of the following:

  • Calls to the Office of Citizens Services can be directed to (708) 424-2677 for the next couple of weeks.
  • Tax Help for Seniors is taking place at the Senior Center, 9547 S. Homan Avenue. Please call (708) 424-2677 to schedule an appointment, or for any other Citizens Services inquiries.
  • Calls to the Recreation Department and Youth Department can be made to the Village Hall, (708) 422-1551. Staff will take your information/number and have the departments call you back. The recreation and youth department offices at the new building will be open, so visit these departments in person. The issue is simply that the phone system is being upgraded and will not be in place for ten days or so.
  • Residents may also email the departments:Recreation Department: eprecreation@yahoo.com; and Youth Department: pallen@evpkadm.org. Both departments have active, regularly updated Facebook pages, so like and follow them at Evergreen Park Recreation, and Evergreen Park Youth Department, to keep up with future happenings.

Plans are to demolish the old building, leaving parking and landscaping still to be completed. A formal Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting are being planned for spring.
