Coronavirus By The Numbers In The South Suburbs

Oak Lawn, Orland Park, Tinley, Palos, Chicago Heights, Homewood, Alsip and Crestwood show sharp spike in coronavirus cases.

COOK COUNTY, IL — Coronavirus cases spiked in the south suburbs with the worst yet to come, public health officials warn. Some models are predicting that the number of cases and deaths in Illinois will peak in mid to late April. Other models indicate later in the summer.

African-Americans are dying of coronavirus at disproportionately higher rates, WBEZ reported. While black residents make up 23 percent of Cook County’s population, they account for 58 percent of the deaths, with half of the deceased living in Chicago. The analysis is based on reports from the Cook County Medical Examiner.

As of April 5, there are a total of 3,098 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in suburban Cook County and 82 deaths. Fifty-four congregate settings, such as long term care facilities or nursing homes, are now reporting one or more confirmed cases. Matteson continues to lead the south suburbs with 83 cases.
