Shots Fired At Palos Heights Murder Victim's Burial: Cops

Two are in custody after mourners reported gunfire during graveside service for murder victim Murad Talib in Evergreen Cemetery, cops say.

EVERGREEN PARK, IL -- Gunfire rang out in an Evergreen Park cemetery as friends and family were gathered at the gravesite of a man gunned down earlier this week in Palos Heights. Police responded to a call of shots fired Wednesday afternoon as mourners were about to bury 39-year-old Murad Talib in Evergreen Cemetery. Two people were taken into custody, police said.

Officers rushed to the cemetery at 3401 W. 87th St., in Evergreen Park around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday. The shooting happened near Talib’s gravesite. He was murdered at a home in Palos Heights Nov. 20. Witnesses said citizens were holding two people when police arrived; both were taken into custody. Mourners told Evergreen Park police they were attending Talib’s burial service.

No one was hit by the gunshots. Numerous witnesses at the scene positively identified the male shooter and his accomplice, police said. A search of the cemetery that included Cook County Sheriff police K9s and officers combing the headstones recovered a revolver.

Talib is believed to have been gunned down at a home in Palos Heights by someone who may have been waiting for him. Talib’s murder is currently being investigated by Palos Heights police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force. Investigators are said to be reviewing home security video from nearby homes on Ishnala Drive in Palos Heights, where Talib was slain. Investigators were notified of the graveside shooting at Talib’s burial service.
