What overwhelm can look like—and how we can support one another

Our community has experienced several extremely painful events within a short period of time. Along with so many of our neighbors, all of us at Martin Therapy Group feel deeply saddened by what has happened and especially concerned for those most directly affected.

Events like these can bring grief, fear, anger, helplessness, or disconnection—even to people with no direct connection to what happened. Reactions may appear immediately or emerge weeks or months later.

Younger children may become more clingy, struggle with sleep or separation, ask repeated questions, or complain of headaches or stomachaches.

Older children and teenagers may become irritable or withdrawn, struggle to concentrate, or experience changes in sleep or school performance.

Adults may notice disrupted sleep, difficulty focusing, less patience, heightened worry, or a strong need to keep checking for updates.

These reactions do not necessarily signal that something is seriously wrong. They often show that people need time, stability, and connection after distressing events.

People can support one another by listening without pressure, giving children simple and honest answers, maintaining familiar routines, limiting repeated exposure to upsetting details, and offering specific help. If you know someone who is struggling, it helps to check in more than once. Support often fades with time, so reaching out again can mean a great deal.

If these reactions intensify, persist, or interfere with everyday life, consider reaching out to a mental health professional.

Martin Therapy Group is here for community members who need support. Frankfort and the surrounding communities are also home to many excellent and caring psychotherapists. What matters most is finding someone to talk with who helps you feel safe, understood, and comfortable.

When a community is hurting, small acts of patience, presence, and compassion can help people feel less alone—and help the community find its footing again.
