St. Mary Catholic School Fosters Inclusivity Through Special Gym Class
St. Mary Catholic School partners with Lincolnway Special Recreation and Western Dupage Recreational Association.
This week, St. Mary Catholic School (SMS) had gym classes that have not only energized students but also furthered their understanding of inclusivity and disabilities. Partnering with the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association and the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association, SMS aimed to instill the values of diversity and inclusion among its students.
Students engaged in various activities facilitated by representatives from both associations, providing them with experiences of embracing diversity. From wheelchair basketball to seated volleyball and goal ball, these activities not only promoted physical activity but also fostered empathy and appreciation for individuals with disabilities.
Assistant Principal Michelle Huizinga expressed her excitement about this opportunity, stating, "These gym classes have been an outstanding experience for our students. It's crucial for them to understand the importance of inclusivity from a young age, and this opportunity has provided them with examples of how to create a welcoming environment for all."

Kate Bowers, a gym teacher at SMS, highlighted the importance of the lessons learned during these classes, saying, "As educators, it's our responsibility to teach more than just physical skills. These classes have shown our students that despite our differences, we’re all human, and it's our attitude towards one another that truly matters."
By engaging in these activities, St. Mary Catholic School is not only fostering a sense of belonging among its students but also giving them life skills that extend beyond the classroom.
