Three questions with Hunchback's Adam Barrera
The LWE senior plays a Gargoyle in the upcoming production of Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame
HND Patch caught up with LWE senior Adam Barrera, who plays a Gargoyle in the upcoming LWE production of Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame April 27-29, and he answered a few of our questions
Adam you are a Gargoyle in this musical. How do you act a part made out of stone? How do you portray feelings when you are immobile ? Why is it that only Quasimodo can hear you?
Quasimodo is the only person who can communicate with the Gargoyles because they are his imaginary friends, so they are mobile in the scenes with just him and talk with him. In scenes with others, however, the Gargoyles are mostly in statue poses or are listening to what's going on.

Quasimodo only takes action after the Gargoyles convince him. Do the Gargoyles serve as narrator of the musical, or as a catalyst for action?

I believe the Gargoyles serve as both narrators and catalysts for action. They help set up the story and conflicts Quasimodo faces, but also advise Quasimodo to take action against the antagonist, Frollo.
After graduating, I will attend the University of Illinois to study Advertising and Spanish, where I also plan on continuing to participate in extracurricular music activities. I am also traveling to Mexico City this summer, which I am very excited for, as I will be able to explore my own culture and speak Spanish!
Well we are excited too, Adam. We are excited to experience these Gargoyle friends of Quasimodo and the rest of the cast in Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame April 27 and 28 at 7pm, April 28 at 1pm, and April 29 at 3pm. Tickets are $10 at the door one hour before showtimes, or skip the line and purchase online at lwemusic.org
