Three questions with Hunchback's Max Adams

The Gargoyle from the LWE production of Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame chatted with us about the show

LWE Sophomore Max Adams plays a Gargoyle in the upcoming LWE production of Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame, which plays April 27-29 (tickets available NOW at lwemusic.org)

Max you play a Gargoyle in this musical. Who are you ?Are you a saint of stone? Are you a figment of Quasimodo’s imagination? Are you something else?

When I'm playing a gargoyle I really do feel like much more than simply a figment of Quasimodo's imagination. I picture the Gargoyles as guardian angel type figures sent into Quasi's life to help guide him through his struggles. They care intensely for Quasimodo and desperately want to steer him in the right direction even though they often have conflicting views.

There is a scene in Tavern Song where you have a nice solo as a gypsy. What do you change about the way you present yourself on stage that differentiates your Gargoyle role from this gypsy role?

To me, playing a gypsy has been extremely different from playing a gargoyle. These gypsies have been through a lot and are constantly stealing to survive. The gypsies rely on each other for support and apart from their small community they are isolated and shunned by society. The gypsies are extremely wily and tricky in order to survive.

What’s next for Max Adams?

I'm extremely excited to be spending the majority of my summer in Spain. I have family I will be visiting for a period but im most excited to explore Madrid. I hope to advance my spanish skills by speaking to natives and getting to know the culture much better.
