Kevin Burns Elected to Fifth Term as Geneva Mayor

Challenger Tom Simonian lost to longtime mayor Kevin Burns in Geneva's mayoral race.

GENEVA, IL -Alderman Tom Simonian was unable to unseat longtime Geneva mayor Kevin Burns in Tuesday's election.

Burns will now serve his fifth term as mayor of Geneva after winning with 3,913 votes over 2,409 for Simonian, according to preliminary results posted on the Kane County Clerk's Office website.

During his campaign for re-election, Burns said his experience, effectiveness and engagement in the community make him the clear choice for mayor. Simonian, a former alderman for the fifth ward, accused Burns of misusing city resources while campaigning.

The Daily Herald reports:

Simonian has accused Burns and a deputy fire chief of using city resources and time to campaign. He filed a lawsuit asking a Kane County judge to make the city's ethics commission reconsider its ruling on his complaint.

The candidates also butted heads on several other topics, including the city's "places for eating tax" and the city's budget, and aldermen have even weighed in on the candidates, which is uncommon for Geneva elections, according to the Daily Herald.
