GENEVA, IL — The second Classic Car Show of the season has been canceled Thursday due to poor air quality, the Geneva Chamber of Commerce announced.

The National Weather Service and Illinois Environmental Protection Agency issued an air quality alert for Wednesday and Thursday due to the smoke from Canadian wildfires polluting the air.

Northern Illinois was expected Wednesday to be on the edge of a "thick plume of surface smoke" that moved in from the north, with cleaner air pushing in from the south, the weather service said.

"The safety and well-being of our participants are always our top priority," the Chamber wrote in an alert. "Thank you for your understanding. Please stay safe and stay cool."

According to AirNow, the U.S. government's air quality data platform, Geneva's air quality is "hazardous," a descriptor used for indices above 300. Geneva sits at 597, as of 4 p.m.

The next Classic Car Show is scheduled for from 5-8 p.m. July 23 in the parking lot behind the Kane County Courthouse in downtown Geneva.
