A contractor struck both the water and natural gas lines Friday morning while digging in the area, Geneva officials said.

GENEVA, IL — A contractor struck both the water and gas lines in the 300 block of Anderson Boulevard while digging in the area Friday morning, Geneva officials said.

The Geneva Public Works Department and Nicor Gas crews were called to the area around 10:30 a.m. to secure the utilities. No evacuations were necessary, but the Geneva Fire Department notified Geneva High School, located a block away, as a precaution, city officials said.

The water division finished repairing the damaged line around 1:20 p.m., around the time when Nicor crews stopped the gas leak, according to an update.

Ford Street remains closed from Anderson Boulevard to McKinley Avenue while Nicor makes permanent repairs to the damaged line.

Residents who live in the Anderson Boulevard area should call 911 if they smell natural gas inside their homes.
