GENEVA, IL — Once the Halloween season is over and Christmas starts to occupy people's minds, pumpkins once sitting on display could start to look a little unappealing. But even so, they'd be a benefit to the Earth through composting. To help, Geneva's Pushing the Envelope Farm is hosting a free composting event Nov. 6.

From 9 a.m. to noon, people can drop off their pumpkins, squashes, gourds, bales of hay and corn stalks at the farm, located at 1700 Averill Road. All visitors have to do beforehand is remove any decorative, inorganic bits from the pumpkins — such as candles, yarn hair, googly eyes.

Pumpkins are made of about 90 percent water and are full of nutrients that are good for the soil. Most of the pumpkins processed in the U.S. are grown in Illinois, according to a news release about the event, so by composting, people are keeping the water and nutrients in the state.
