Careless Discarding of Smoking Material Lead to Geneva House Fire: Fire Officials

GENEVA, IL - Fire officials believe the careless discarding of smoking materials lead to a house fire Monday morning in Geneva.
Firefighters were call to the blaze at 2743 Conant Court at about 9 a.m. after a resident returned home to find smoke coming from the garage and west side of the home and called 911. Two residents that had been sleeping inside the home at the time of the blaze were able to safely get out on their own, according to a city of Geneva press release.
When fire crews arrived, they determined the blaze had extended from the garage into the house. The fire, which was contained to the garage wall and a ceiling area of an unfinished portion of the basement, was extinguished within 20 minutes, fire officials said.

Damage to the home and contents is estimated to be $40,000, according to the news release. Firefighters from St. Charles, Batavia and Elburn provided assistance to Geneva during the incident.
