Controlled Burn To Destroy Invasive Plant Species In Geneva

Geneva officials said residents shouldn't be concerned if they see smoke billowing on the city's west side Wednesday.

GENEVA, IL — A controlled burn is scheduled to last for a few hours on Geneva's west side Wednesday, officials announced. The city's contractor was notified late Tuesday that weather conditions for the burn would be favorable Wednesday.

The fire, happening near the Water Treatment Center at the corner of Keslinger and Peck roads, is intended to destroy invasive plant species and consequently allow native vegetation to grow back stronger, officials said in a Wednesday announcement.

The Geneva Fire Department is aware of the burning, which started mid-morning Wednesday and is supposed to last several hours before it's extinguished.
