The Iron Horse 5K benefiting the Les Turner ALS Foundation recognizes iconic New York Yankee Lou Gehrig. The Iron Horse 5K offers runners a challenging course through beautiful Fitchie Creek Forest Preserve, winding over crushed limestone, gravel, and pavement. The top male and female finishers will receive the Iron Horse award.
Often called Lou Gehrig’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neuromuscular disorder in which degeneration of nerves leads to muscle weakness and impaired speaking, swallowing and breathing, eventually causing paralysis and death. ALS occurs throughout the world regardless of race, ethnicity or socioeconomic status. People commonly develop symptoms between 40 and 70 years of age, although the disease can strike at any age. Some symptoms are treatable and there is currently no cure for ALS.
