Explosion At Factory Near Wheeler Park Forces Precautionary Evacuation

Geneva residents are asked to stay away from Wheeler Park and the surrounding area on Tuesday afternoon.

GENEVA, IL — An explosion occurred at Olon Industries, near Wheeler Park, Tuesday afternoon, prompting a hazmat response from the Geneva Fire Department.

The company, a manufacturer of woodworking components, is located at 411 S. Union St.

Fire officials said they are not sure what caused the explosion or if anyone was injured. As a precautionary measure, people at Wheeler Park and the nearby senior center were evacuated, and residents are encouraged to stay away from the area.

Staff from the Geneva Public Works Department have disconnected the electric supply to the building. In an alert issued at 3 p.m., officials said it appears that the city's water supply has not been impacted by the explosion.

An investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
