Geneva Police Will Participate In National Drug Take-Back Day

GENEVA, IL — For the 20th time, the Geneva Police Department will collect unwanted or expired prescription medications as part of National Drug Take-Back Day.

Police are working with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to offer the service as a way to provide the public a safe, responsible and convenient way to dispose of prescription drugs.

"These medications should not be flushed down the toilet or sink because they could end up in local drinking water supplies," officials said in a news release. "By turning in old medications, people are preventing pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs."

People can drop off items at the police department, 20 Police Plaza, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30.

The following items will be accepted:

• Prescription medications
• Medication samples
• Over-the-counter medications
• Vitamins
• Pet medications
• Non-controlled DEA drugs

Pills should be removed from their original container and poured into a plastic bag. People should bring bottles with personal information back with them, officials said.

Items that will not be accepted at the event include liquids, ointments, illegal substances and narcotics, thermometers, IV bags, needles or empty containers.
