Homemade Knife Discovered After Inmate Fight at Kane Co. Jail

The shank marks the first time a weapon has been found at the facility since it opened about 7 years ago.

A makeshift knife was recovered by Kane County Jail officials Aug. 20 after a fight between inmates, marking the first time a weapon has been found in the St. Charles Township facility since it opened in 2008, according to a Kane County Chronicle report.

Omar H. Caballero, 20, of the 200 block of North Smith Street, Aurora, is accused of having the shank, and he was charged with felony possession of a weapon in a penal institution, the report stated.

The fight, which police claim to be “gang-motivated,” was between Caballero and three other inmates, the report stated. After the men were separated, a 4-inch, sharpened metal piece fell from Caballero’s pant leg, the report added.

The three other men were each charged with separate counts of felony mob action in connection with the brawl, the report stated.
