A measure to increase the auditor’s, circuit clerk’s, coroner’s, recorder’s and board chairman’s salaries by 2.5 percent for four years beginning Dec. 1, 2016, failed in an 8-13 vote.

Dissenters said the vote was badly timed, as it came on the heels of the primary election and happened soon after homeowners received their property tax bills.

A debate over raises for elected officials began last month. During the initial debates, officials discussed potential raises between 10 and 33 percent for elected department heads with Chairman Chris Lauzen slated to receive the 33 perecent raise -- an amount that many board members said was just too high, according to the Daily Herald.

The raise amount up for vote on Tuesday meant officials who won the November election for county seats would see their total salaries increase by a total of 10 percent over their four-year term or 2.5 percent per year, the Daily Herald reports.

That would have meant the auditor’s salary would have increased from $88,214 to $97,371 over four years while the circuit clerk’s salary, which is $107,961, would go up to $116,263 in four years, according to the Chicago Tribune. As for Lauzen, his salary of $107,961 could have increased to $116,263.
