Police Investigating Death of Des Plaines Woman Killed on Bike in Aurora

The bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and no tickets were issued.

The Aurora Police Department is investigating the death of a 66-year-old Des Plaines woman who was killed after colliding with a car while riding her bicycle with a group of people in Aurora, according to a release from the department.

A preliminary investigation showed that Lonnie Wilkinson, of the 1400 block of Fourth Avenue in Des Plaines, was riding her bicycle westbound on the Virgil Gillman Trail shortly before 11 a.m. Sept. 5 when she was hit by a southbound 2013 Nissan Altima driven by a 48-year-old Sugar Grove man as she was crossing Densmore Road.

Wilkinson was taken to an Aurora hospital by paramedics where she was pronounced deceased at 11:36 a.m.

Wilkinson was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and no tickets were issued. There were no outward signs of alcohol or drug use at the scene. Neither the driver of the Altima, nor his two passengers, two male teens ages 14 and 15, were injured. The ongoing investigation is being conducted by Aurora Police Traffic Division Investigators.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sept. 8 at the Kane County Coroner’s Office in Geneva.
