Route 31 Underpass To Close For About 4 Months: Geneva Officials

The closure is the second of two associated with Union Pacific's Third Main Line project that kicked off in 2022.

GENEVA, IL — The Route 31 underpass in Geneva will be shut down for the next four months starting Monday, officials said.

The closure is the second of two associated with Union Pacific's Third Main Line project that kicked off in 2022. The railroad company is installing a third line near the current Union Pacific-West tracks spanning Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago.

Work this spring will involve pavement modifications and the construction of a new train bridge, according to a news release. The underpass will reopen to traffic on June 24, weather permitting.

The first phase of the project, which occurred last summer, involved crews building abutments, wing walls and other support structures south of the existing train bridge.

Two grade crossings will also be temporarily shut down later this year. The Third Street crossing is scheduled for work in late June, and the one at Western Avenue is planned for mid-September. Officials said the closures will be staggered so only one crossing will be impacted at a given time.

Construction on the entire project is expected to be completed in late 2024.
