Route 31 Underpass Reopens After 2 Months Of Train Bridge Rehab
There is a second phase of the project, but it's not set to start until 2024, officials said.
GENEVA, IL — After two months of construction, the Route 31 underpass in Geneva reopened Sept. 1.
The underpass shut down July 17 as a Union Pacific contractor built abutments, wing walls and other support structures south of the existing train bridge.
There is a phase two to the project — a result of supply chain issues with steel, Geneva officials noted — but it's not set to begin until 2024. The second half will involve constructing a new bridge and making pavement modifications.

The work is part of Union Pacific's effort to build a third railroad line near the current UP-West tracks spanning from Peck Road in Geneva to West Chicago. The project began in 2022 and is expected to be completed in July 2024.
