Vikings' Tennis Loses to Neuqua Valley, Looks Forward to Conference Friday
The UEC tennis tournament starts Friday, and the Vikings are getting geared up against great competition. The girls last 5-2 to Neuqua, a good showing against a powerhouse program.

The Geneva tennis team lost, 5-2, at Neuqua Valley Tuesday in an Upstate Eight Conference crossover match.
But despite the loss by the Vikings (15-9), who play in the River Division, coach Maureen Weiler was not disappointed, pointing out Neuqua, from the Valley Division, is the "top dog" in either of the conference's divisions.
"They beat Batavia, which has enough points already to win the (River Division) Conference tournament (Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9, 10)," Weiler said. "So I definitely would say they are the top team in the conference.

"I thought we played aggressive and tough. The scores might not show it, but we were competitive in a lot of the matches. We were right there with them. The kids came off the court after their matches, even the ones who lost, feeling they hit the ball well. But against a team like Neuqua, you have to hit more good shots than usual."
Annie Tourte won her match at first singles, 6-1, 6-0, over Riti Vohra. At No. 2 singles, Sarah Kappele lost, 6-1, 6-0, to Ashley Cha. At third singles, Michaela Simone lost, 6-2, 6-0, to Rachel Worley.

At first doubles, Carly Ausman and Claire Chlasta pulled out a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Elexa Geist and Kelly Cain. At No. 2 doubles, Abbey Baumer and Stephanie Michaels lost, 6-0, 6-2, to Molly Sonricker and Christine Zhang.
At third doubles, Kirby Arloff and Emily Malecha fell, 6-3, 6-2, to Erin Alenciks and Kate Danessa. And at No. 4 doubles, Allison Donahue and Nora Burkhardt dropped their match, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7 (super tiebreaker) to Jenn Cha and Megan Hannigan.
The Upstate Eight Conference River Division tournament will take place at Elgin and St. Charles East High Schools Friday and St. Charles East and Geneva High Schools Saturday.
The Vikings will use mostly the same lineup as they did against Neuqua Valley, with one change being the return of Stephanie Sharpe to No. 2 singles. Sharpe missed the Neuqua Valley match due to sickness.
"I hope we finish near the top of the conference," Weiler said.
