Yorkville Man Dies After He's Struck By Train In Geneva

Crossings at Third Street and Western Avenue were blocked for more than two hours while police investigated the collision.

GENEVA, IL — A 49-year-old Yorkville man is dead after being hit by a freight train Friday at the Third Street crossing in downtown Geneva.

Geneva police said officers were called to the area shortly before 8:55 p.m. after receiving a call about a train accident involving a pedestrian. When officers arrived, they found the man near the train tracks east of Third Street.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity was not released pending notification of family.

After locating the Yorkville man, police met with two men who said they and the victim exited a Metra train on the south side of the tracks before the collision. The men told police their car was parked on the north side of the tracks.

While the emergency guardrail arms were down, authorities said the trio went underneath the arms to cross the tracks and reach their car. The two men made it across, but the Yorkville man was hit by an eastbound freight train on the north track., police said.
