Yorkville Man IDed After Freight Train Collision In Geneva: Coroner

His preliminary cause of death is said to be "multiple injuries," according to the Kane County Coroner's Office.

YORKVILLE, IL — The Kane County Coroner's Office has released the name of the man who died May 5 after being hit by a freight train in Geneva.

The resident was identified as 49-year-old Douglas Johnson, of Yorkville, officials said Thursday. His preliminary cause of death, determined in an external examination Monday, was cited as "multiple injuries."

Toxicology samples have been collected and sent to a forensic lab for analysis, the coroner said.

Police officers were called to the Third Street crossing in downtown Geneva just before 8:55 p.m. after receiving a call about a train colliding with a pedestrian. When they arrived, they found Johnson near the train tracks east of Third Street.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

After locating the Yorkville man, police met with two men who said they and the victim exited a Metra train on the south side of the tracks before the collision. The men told police their car was parked on the north side of the tracks, Patch reported.

While the emergency guardrail arms were down, officials said the trio went underneath the arms to cross the tracks and reach their car. The two men made it across, but Johnson was hit by an eastbound freight train on the north track.

The investigation into the crash is being conducted by the Kane County Coroner's Office, Geneva Police Department and Union Pacific Railroad and remains ongoing.
