The McAninch Arts Center (MAC) presents the spellbinding, Argentinian male dance group MALEVO at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28. A Golden Buzzer winner on Season 11 of the hit TV Show “America’s Got Talent,” MALEVO’s high energy, percussive performance style based on the traditional Malambo folk dance associated with gauchos, has been compared to the thrill of STOMP! and RIVERDANCE. This MAC engagement of MALEVO coincides with Hispanic Heritage month, is part of the company’s fall tour featuring 19 performances locations across the U.S. A free MAC Chat will begin one hour prior to the performance.

MALEVO, created by director, choreographer and dancer Matías Jaime, pushes the traditional Argentine folk dance Malambo beyond its limits, merging it with other dance styles, such as Flamenco, and urban percussion. Originally performed in competition, the dance form evolved to be executed in various ways and has no formal choreography. This loud and enthralling dance is closely tied with Argentinian resilience, confidence, and self-reliance making for a powerful and emotional performance.

Dance Informa calls MALEVO, “…a celebration of technical prowess and cultural pride, evident in every movement and expression;” and Australian Arts Review says, “With footwork-stomping dexterity supposedly inspired by the rhythm of galloping horses matched with vigorous drumming and drumstick-clicking that sounds like the fastest secretary at an old typewriter, it’s a sight and sound world that entraps and captivates.” MALEVO has been seen in Las Vegas, New York, Dubai, Paris, Cairo, Saint Petersburg and Montreal, as well as in special performances with Latin pop-star Ricky Martin, Cirque du Soleil and a year-long residency at Universal Studios Japan. The company was recently named as cultural ambassadors of Argentina.
