COD Begins Phased Return to Campus for Summer Session

Limited Number of In-Person Classes, Alternative Instruction Available

As College of DuPage begins its phased return to campus, COD officials are preparing to offer a limited number of in-person classes during the 2021 summer session. Registration is now available and classes begin June 1.

The upcoming summer session will feature approximately 1,800 course sections, including 191 hybrid sections, with partial in-person instruction. Additionally, for the first time in more than a year, 57 sections will have full in-person instruction. Remaining sections will be offered in a traditional online format or as virtual class meetings. In addition, COD’s online course internet fee of $57.50 will be waived for all students.

“Our faculty, staff and administrators are putting in a tremendous amount of work to ensure students have the best possible learning environment, regardless of the mode of delivery,” said COD President Dr. Brian Caputo. “While we look forward to welcoming students back to campus, we continue to examine the coronavirus situation from every angle to ensure the ongoing safety of the entire campus community.”

COD’s summer session includes 10-week, eight-week and two five-week sessions. Priority registration for students with 30 or more completed credits begins Tuesday, March 23. Registration for all others, including new students, begins Wednesday, March 31.

Students in hybrid courses visit the campus for labs, studios or clinical work, with additional required learning online. Online courses, meanwhile, are internet-based, conducted off-campus and adhere to instructor timelines and designated learning outcomes. Students interact with each other primarily through discussion boards and written messages.

Virtual class meetings are designed to allow students face-to-face contact in a remote format. They take place completely online in real time at specified days and times using video chat software.

More information will be available as College leaders continue with their summer semester planning, Dr. Caputo said.

“College leaders currently are finalizing health and safety procedures as we prepare to offer these limited number of face-to-face courses,” he said. “In the meantime, we continue to consult local and state health departments and follow the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
