College of DuPage Celebrates Global Education Week Nov. 16 to 20

In celebration of Global Education Week, College of DuPage will host a series of virtual presentations Nov. 16 to 20.

The week of events kick off at noon on Monday, Nov. 16, with “Global Lookism and the Impact on Women’s Career Development.” COD Associate Vice President of Academic Partnerships and Learning Resources Cynthia Sims will discuss the research that led to the publication of "The Politics of Lookism in Global Workplaces: Physical and Personal Appearance Discrimination in the 21st Century Workplace." Additional programming includes “Language and Identities Beyond Borders,” featuring sociocultural and linguistic anthropologist Dr. Jonathan Rosa at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17. Representing the Stanford Graduate School of Education and the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity, Rosa will discuss his research theorizing the co-naturalization of language and race as a key feature of modern governance. Specifically, he will analyze the interplay between youth socialization, raciolinguistic formations and structural inequity in urban contexts. The presentation is co-sponsored by the Office of Latino Outreach, the Women’s Studies Committee, the Office of Student Life and the Latin American Studies Committee. To close out the week, COD English Professor Danica Hubbard and Coordinator for Federal Fellowships at the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars Tiana Morris will share their experiences living and teaching in Croatia at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18. Hubbard and Morris will discuss themes of ethnic discrimination and displacement within the upheaval of moving from one region to another. Click here to access the Zoom link.
