GLEN ELLYN, IL — Glenbard District 87 announced Monday that the 2020-21 school year will start with remote learning before shifting to a hybrid learning model.

Classes are set to start with e-learning Aug. 17. The district will change to hybrid learning (online and onsite instruction) Sept. 8, according to a letter to the community from District 87 Superintendent David Larson.

In the letter, Larson said the start of hybrid learning will be delayed for a number of reasons. These reasons include staffing issues, a building capacity planning and additional planning around staff and student safety, Larson wrote.

He added that "postponing the in-person portion of the Hybrid model allows faculty and students to carefully and effectively focus on becoming accustomed to the features of livestreaming instruction."

Once the hybrid model goes into effect on Sept. 8, students will be required to wear masks in school and socially distance. Students will attend school two days a week, depending on the group in which they are designated. Wednesday will be an all-remote day.

Larson wrote, "While this is an adjustment to our plan, know that we are very confident with the features and options provided by our robust technology infrastructure."

Parents had until Aug. 2 to opt into a fully remote learning option.
