Does Your College Essay Coach Have Emotional Intelligence?

Why work with one that does?

For teens with mental health challenges, the common app essay can be even more of a mountain to scale than it is to others.

I often say that my work as a college essay consultant is part writing coach, part therapist, (and not just for the student)!

This week, two sets of parents shared how opting to have their child work with a college essay expert was the best investment for them, as a family!

The most obvious reasons are making sure there is a story that is well-crafted. Grammar gremlins, beware! Coaches are trusty editorial whisperers, working with students to ensure all the elements of their essay meld together smoothly.

What is just as important, but much less discussed, are reasons that pertain to psychological safety.

For one set of parents, it was beneficial having a neutral party, someone their child did not know personally, working with them. It created space to share very personal and distressing details that students may not have wanted to divulge to a known entity. In this case, it was the parents themselves. Confidentiality comes first, unless, of course, a student is in harms way.

For the second family, their senior has anxiety and writing essays can be like climbing a mountain. My role here included working with the parent to determine when was a good time to nudge their student to have their next draft ready and when was it best to reassure the student that they were always in the driver's seat and knew their workload best.

Coaches are like cheerleaders, lifting spirits and boosting confidence. Not only is it my privelege to champion my students' efforts but, for parents, it takes some of the edge off knowing that someone else has their child's back, too.

Finally, if a student is going away for school, does anyone really want memories of this, potentially, final year together to be a stinker? Coaches reduce the friction between parents and kids as to what to write on. I am there to help students navigate those tricky topics with grace and authenticity, sharing their journey in a way that tugs at heartstrings.

Let's face it; college apps can feel like a rollercoaster. But coaches can be a parent's ticket to a smoother ride. They save parents time and reduce stress so the family can fully focus on the rest of the application process. To learn more, text (630) 915-8654. Or visit, writersstudio.us
