Duo Indicted in 5 ATM Armed Robberies in Glen Ellyn, Other 'Burbs

Kenneth Hayes and Antonio Dunner also are accused of robbing an Elmhurst gas station.

A federal grand jury indicted two men Wednesday in connection with a series of armed robberies at ATM machines in Glen Ellyn and other West and Northwest Suburbs in 2015, according to a US Attorney's Office press release.

Kenneth Hayes, 21, of Carpentersville, and Antonio Dunner, 22, of Elgin, were charged with conspiracy to interfere with commerce by threats or violence, five counts of interfering with commerce by threats or violence and two counts of carrying, using or brandishing a firearm in connection with a crime of violence.

According to the indictment, the duo robbed or tried to rob people at drive-up ATMs on the following dates and in the following locations:

  • Sept. 23 and Oct. 8 in Northbrook
  • Sept. 16, in Glen Ellyn
  • Sept. 23, in Park Ridge
  • Oct. 19 in Arlington Heights

The indictment also accuses Hayes and Dunner of robbing an Elmhurst gas station Nov. 1 at gunpoint.

In the ATM robberies, the pair scouted potential locations, then hid while they watched potential victims use the cash machine, the indictment stated. Hayes and Dunner wore disguises and verbally threatened people during the incidents and would steal their cash, as well as their cell phones, which they would ditch so no one could call police, the indictment added.

If convicted, the conspiracy charge and each count of the interference of commerce charge carries a maximum of 20 years in prison. The first count of the firearm charge carries a mandatory minimum of seven years, and the second count carries a mandatory minimum of 25 years.

No arraignment date has been set for Hayes and Dunner.
