Glen Ellyn Park District hosts week-long celebration of Olympic ideals

Glen Ellyn, IL -- The Glen Ellyn Park District invites residents of all ages to join in a week-long celebration of the Olympics by participating in a variety of fun activities.

From June 20 through June 25, everyone can demonstrate their skills in several events designed for athletes of all ages and abilities.

“We want everyone to come out and have a good time,” Mary Defiglia, Assistant Superintendent of Recreation, said. “It’s a celebration of community pride and commitment to fitness. Plus, everyone has the chance win a gold, silver or bronze medal.”

All participants must possess a “Passport to the Olympics” to compete. Passports will be stamped each time an activity is completed. The park district will award gold, silver and bronze medals based on the number of activities completed.

National Olympic day is celebrated annually in more than 160 countries. Commemorating the birth of the modern Olympic Games, Olympic Day is not only a celebration, but an international effort to promote fitness, well-being and the Olympic ideals of sportsmanship, fair play, perseverance and respect.

The schedule of events in Glen Ellyn is:

June 20-24: Maryknoll Park (Holes & Knolls hours of operation)

  • Bocce Ball
  • Disc Golf
  • Horseshoes
  • Miniature Golf

June 22: Sunset Pool (12 pm-2 pm)

  • Swimming Laps

June 23: Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center (9 am-12 pm)

A celebration of everyone’s accomplishments will take place during the Parade of Athletes and Medal Ceremony in Ackerman Park on Saturday, June 23, from 10 am-12 pm. The ceremony will feature special guest Olympian Ron Urick (Canoe/Kayak, 1988).

Passports are available as of June 1 at Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center, Main Street Recreation Center, Maryknoll Park Clubhouse and Spring Avenue Recreation Center for $5 per person. All activities are free except the following:

  • Mini golf is $3
  • Golf disc rental is $3 (or bring your own & play for free)
  • Swimmers must have a pool pass or pay the $5 daily admission fee.
