Fire Pit Explosion Injures 8 Teens, Leaves 1 In Coma: Reports

Police said a flammable liquid was poured into a fire pit, causing an explosion and injuring teens in Glendale Heights

GLENDALE HEIGHTS, IL — Eight people were hurt, several seriously, in a fire pit explosion in suburban Glendale Heights Saturday night, according to police and media reports. Police said a flammable material was poured into the fire pit, causing the blast in a backyard at around 10:15 p.m.

Parents told WGN that students from Glenbard East High School were attending a bonfire at the home when the explosion occured.

A parent of one injured teen said a gas can exploded after getting too close to the fire. Other parents said one wounded teen was burned over much of his body, two girls suffered serious facial injuries and another teen is in a coma after the incident, according to WGN.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact police at (630) 260-6070, according to WBBM. The explosion reportedly happened in the 1800 block of Marci Court.
