Glen Ellyn Adds Cannabis Referendum Question To November Ballot

The question will read, "Shall the Village permit the sale of recreational cannabis within Village limits?"

GLEN ELLYN, IL — Glen Ellyn will have a referendum question about recreational cannabis on the Nov. 3 ballot to gauge voter interest. The referendum question, which is non-binding, will read, "Shall the Village permit the sale of recreational cannabis within Village limits?”

The village approved the language for the referendum question in late April.

The Glen Ellyn village board voted in Nov. 2019 to impose a moratorium ordinance on whether to allow recreational cannabis sales. The moratorium ordinance was recently extended until Dec. 15, 2020, so the village can consider the referendum question results before taking an official vote.

The moratorium was initially imposed to allow the village to see the effect of recreational cannabis sales on nearby municipalities.

Recreational cannabis sales became legal in Illinois as of Jan. 1, 2020. Nearby Naperville recently voted to permit cannabis sales after posing a similar referendum question in March in which 53 percent of voters favored cannabis sales.
