Glen Ellyn K-9 Officer Gets Bulletproof Vest From Fan In Wheaton

The woman donated money to get a bulletproof vest for the 5-year-old police dog.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — One of Glen Ellyn's finest will be a little safer at work thanks to a thoughtful donation from a Wheaton woman. The K-9 officer, named Madden, recently got a bulletproof vest from Ellen Melka, a woman who first learned about Madden when she met his handler, officer Tony Terranova, at an event last year, Daily Herald reports.

Melka and Terranova met at Cop on a Rooftop, an annual fundraiser held at local Dunkin' Donuts stores throughout the nation. It was her conversation with Terranova about the 5-year-old lab, that led Melka to gift money to help the Glen Ellyn Police Department get Madden his bulletproof vest.

Members of the police department — including Madden — were present at Monday's village meeting to show their appreciation for Melka. According to Daily Herald, they gave Melka a gift basket and a photo of Madden in his vest.
