Glen Ellyn Park District Plans To Start Improvements In January

The news comes after a referendum question for $15.9 million to support repairs to park district property was projected to pass.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — The Glen Ellyn Park District plans to start improvements in Jan. 2023, after the $15.9 million bond referendum question it presented to voters Tuesday was projected to pass. The referendum question received 4,757 "yes" votes, for 62 percent of the total vote, according to the DuPage County Clerk's Office.

"We are so grateful, and would like to thank every member of the Glen Ellyn Park District community for your continued support," park district officials said in a statement. "From the survey responses to the ballots cast in yesterday’s vote, your voices have been heard and we are honored to deliver what matters most to you here in our community."

The park district plans to start project designing and bidding come July. The upcoming projects include the addition of four new parks, along with the following initiatives that were designated as priorities:

  • Sunset Pool improvements and maintenance
  • Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center expansion and maintenance
  • Maintenance and improvements to other parks
  • Acquisition of land to develop four new parks

The first phase of work is expected to kick off in early 2023 at the ball fields located at Village Green. This will be followed by park improvements in April. Maintenance and construction at Sunset Pool is slated to start in Sept. 2023 and developments at Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center are scheduled to start in early 2024.

The work is expected to take about 3.5 years, park district officials said.

They wrote, "We look forward to the completion of these projects so that Sunset Pool will continue to serve generations of families; Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center will welcome more gymnasts and provide enhanced fitness programs; and individuals and families will have new places to fish, learn about our environment, have picnics, and play."
