Glen Ellyn’s Restored Boathouse on Display at This Weekend’s Cardboard Cup Regatta

Plus, find out what fun is in store during this weekend's Fourth of July festivities in Glen Ellyn.

The meticulous restoration of “the jewel” of Glen Ellyn, the Lake Ellyn Boathouse, is nearly complete with officials planning to have the village landmark on display at this weekend’s Cardboard Cup Regatta, Glen Ellyn Park District Executive Director Dave Harris told the Daily Herald.

The project, which got underway in September, was meant to restore the boathouse to a close-replica of its 1935 design while updating it with modern amenities, according to the article. A limestone chimney on the boathouse has been exposed but some of the modern amenities tackled during the renovations include the remodeling of bathrooms, the replacement of metal doors with ones that allow for better views of Lake Ellyn and a new deck that includes stainless steel, cable railings. Visitors to the can already enjoy new patios and landscaping, the Daily Herald reports.

The project is 95 percent complete and the park district plans to reveal the interior of the boathouse on Aug. 1, which is when the building will once again be open to host private events, according to the Daily Herald.

While the park will be open during the Fourth of July festivities this weekend and the Cardboard Cup Regatta, visitors are asked to “respect the continued efforts to complete the project,” according to the village’s website.

“There will be areas of the park that requires turf restoration and if those locations could be avoided, it would be appreciated. Additionally, small tasks will continue through the end of July to fully prepare the Boathouse for events and rentals,” according to the village. “As a reminder, the public restrooms and water fountain are now located near the playground.”
