Glenbard Parent Series explores importance of early language

Thirty Million Words: Building a Child's Brain with Dana Suskind M.D. at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Glen Ellyn Public Library

The Glenbard Parent Series: (GPS) Navigating Healthy Families will present Thirty Million Words: Building a Child's Brain with Dana Suskind M.D. at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Glen Ellyn Public Library.

What nurtures the brain of our youngest to optimum intelligence, stability and future success in life? Answers will be provided by Suskind, a pediatric otolaryngologist who specializes in hearing loss and cochlear implantation as the director of Pediatric Hearing Loss and Cochlear Implant program at the University of Chicago.

Suskind is the author of "Thirty Million Words" and is director/founder of the Thirty Million Words Initiative, based on research that demonstrates the importance of early language exposure on the developing child. Suskind's goal is to help all children reach their full potential and to close the ever-widening achievement gap.

Suskind will reveal the recent science supporting her work and outline how parents/guardians can best put this science into practice. Participants will learn how to enhance their home language environment to optimize their child's brain development and his/her ability to learn.

Continuing professional development units are available.

GPS is generously sponsored by the Cebrin Goodman Center, Cooperative Association for Special Education (CASE), College of DuPage, DuPage Medical Group, Emmy Gaffey Foundation, Glenbard Early Childhood Collaborative, Holiday Inn/Carol Stream, Prevention Leadership Team of the DuPage County Health Department and Birth to 5 Community Coalition District 93.
