James Garbarino and Tim Lawson to Headline 2020 MISTOP Conferenc

College of DuPage’s Psychology faculty and Psi Beta Honor Society will host the 27th Midwest Institute for Students and Teachers of Psychology (MISTOP) from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6, in the Student Resource Center, Room 2000, on the College’s Glen Ellyn campus.

Early registration fees are $150 for college instructors, $125 for high school instructors, $50 for adjunct faculty and retirees, and $30 for students. The deadline for early registration is Friday, Feb. 21. Beginning Saturday, Feb. 22, the student fee will increase by $20, while all other fees will increase by $25. The registration fee includes breakfast, snack and dinner on the day of the event.

Each year at MISTOP, high school teachers and students gather to share knowledge and experience of the science of psychology. The conference will feature more than a dozen informational sessions presented by leaders in the industry, including Dr. James Garbarino, Psychology Professor, and the Maude C. Clarke, Chair in Humanistic Psychology, both at Loyola University Chicago, and Dr. Tim Lawson, Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychology at Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Garbarino has served as a consultant or advisor to a wide range of nationally recognized science and medical organizations. In 1991, he undertook missions for UNICEF to assess the impact of the Gulf War upon children in Kuwait and Iraq. Lawson recently won the Robert S. Daniel Teaching Excellence Award from Division 2 of the American Psychological Association, and he has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching and distinguished scholarship from Mount St. Joseph University and Ohio Magazine.

The conference also will allow time for informal sharing and networking among participants.

Students are encouraged to submit proposals for the Psychology Teachers at Community Colleges and Psi Beta Outstanding Poster Award, while teachers are invited to submit proposals for the Society for the Teaching of Psychology Outstanding Poster Award. A $100 stipend and a certificate of recognition will be awarded to both winners.

Students must submit poster proposals to Or’Shaundra Benson at bensono@cod.edu and teachers must submit proposals to Elizabeth Arnott-Hill at Arnott-hille@cod.edu. The deadline to submit all proposals is Friday, Feb. 21.
