Judge Agrees to Let Glen Ellyn Man Represent Himself in Attempted Murder Trial

Charles Mitchell is accused of beating his father in a hotel room in June.

Despite a DuPage County judge's warning that representing yourself during an attempted murder trial is typically not a “good move,” a 27-year-old Glen Ellyn man will be doing just that.

Charles Mitchell, a Wheaton-Warrenville South High School graduate, is accused of beating his 61-year-old father this past June in a hotel room he shared with his dad and brother in the 600 block of Roosevelt Road, the Daily Herald reports.

Mitchell, of 677 Roosevelt Road, is charged with attempted first-degree murder/intend death or great bodily harm, domestic battery, which causes bodily harm; domestic battery, making physical contact and criminal damage to property not exceeding $300.

After a couple angry outbursts in court, and threats by DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin to hold Mitchell in contempt of court, Guerin agreed to allow Mitchell to represent himself during his trial, according to the article.

Mitchell is accused of beating his father after a fight broke out between Mitchell and his brother in the family’s hotel room. Mitchell allegedly hit the brother in the face and gouged his eyes. He then got into a physical fight with his 61-year-old father, striking and kicking his father about his head and body.
