Lombard Teen Dies After Choking on Food in Lunch Room: Coroner

An investigation continues into the death of Abdul Jalal, 15, following the medical emergency last week at Willowbrook High School.

VILLA PARK, IL - A 15-year-old Willowbrook High School student with Down syndrome died after choking on a piece of food in the school’s cafeteria last week, according to preliminary autopsy results released Monday by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office.

Abdul Jalal of Lombard was unresponsive when paramedics arrived at Willowbrook High School, 1250 Ardmore Avenue in Villa Park, at about 12:16 p.m. on Sept. 19, according to a coroner’s office news release. Paramedics attempted life-saving measures and Jalal was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room a short time later.

Jalal had Downs syndrome, but authorities said Monday it does not appear his disability had “any bearing" on his death.
