MAC Hosts Free Hokusai Japan Fest Aug. 9

Programming for this family-friendly festival features traditional Japanese entertainment, kids activities, food vendors and more

In June the Cleve Carney Museum of Art (CCMA) and the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) located at 425 Fawell Blvd. on the campus of College of DuPage (COD) celebrated this summer’s must-see exhibition “Hokusai & Ukiyo-e: The Floating World, Artworks from the Chiossone Collection,” with a free “Hokusai Japan Fest.” Due to the overwhelming success of that event, the MAC has added a second “Hokusai Japan Fest” Saturday, Aug. 9 from 1-5:30 p.m. at the MAC’s Lakeside Pavilion.

The programming for this family-friendly festival will feature traditional Japanese entertainment and disciplines evocative of the Edo Era. The performance schedule is as follows:

  • 1-1:35 p.m.: ORiHANA, a modern J-pop project reimagining iconic songs from anime TV series and movies, as well as popular songs by celebrated Japanese musicians
  • 1:45-2:15 p.m.: Koto (Japanese Harp and the National Instrument of Japan) Performance by Toki Kimura
  • 2:35-2:50 p.m.: Oda Sensei - Giant Brush Japanese Calligraphy Demonstration
  • 3:10-4:10 p.m.: Sumo Wrestling Demonstration
  • 4:20-4:50 p.m.: Fuko Kyudojo - Kyudo (Contemplative Japanese Traditional Archery) Demonstration
