Is There a Deal in Place for Former Dominick's in Glen Ellyn?

The answer is, "no." But the village is working with the property owners to hopefully secure a deal.

Village officials on Friday quieted any rumors over a deal being in place to fill the former Dominick’s story, which has been vacant for over a year.

Village staff has been working with property owners of the Baker Hill location, at 880 Roosevelt Road, since it closed to find a way to fill the space, according to an update from Glen Ellyn Economic Development.

“While the buzz about town indicates a deal is done, that unfortunately is not the case at this time,” according to the update.

Village staff and property owners have been in touch with grocers and big box retailers to gauge interest in the site. While the village has been in talks with two separate retailers, nothing has been finalized. And one of those retailers has since withdrawn their interest in pursuing the location while the other retailer is continuing discussions with the property owner.

“In addition to the marketing being done by the property owner for the vacancy. Albertson’s (owner of Dominick’s) has contracted with real estate brokerage firm Jones Lang LaSalle to market the remaining leases across Chicagoland, including Baker Hill, for sublet opportunities,” according to the economic development update.

The village is also working on marketing the site as part of a coalition with neighboring communities in DuPage County. Together the 9 communities have created a marketing campaign “1 Call 10 Stores”, which includes a website www.1call10stores.com, brochures and a social media campaign.

The village plans to continue to work with the property owners and interested parties to get a deal in place.

“Filling this vacancy is important not only to the residents in the neighboring area, but also to the health and vitality of the existing businesses in the center,” according to the village of Glen Ellyn update.

Safeway, the parent company of Dominick’s, announced in 2013 it would sell all 72 of its Chicago-area Dominick’s stores, including the one in Glen Ellyn at 800 Roosevelt Road.

Since then, several grocers have filled vacant stores throughout the suburbs, but the Glen Ellyn site still remains empty.
