Voters to Decide on Glen Ellyn Pool Referendum, Candidates to Watch in Tuesday's Election

Get information on candidates squaring off in some of the hottest races in Tuesday's election.

Should Glen Ellyn or should Glen Ellyn not move forward with plans for a $13.5 million indoor pool at the Ackerman Sports & Fitness Center?

That is the question local voters will be asked Tuesday as part of a referendum for the aquatic center, which would feature a main pool that would span 25 yards by 121 feet and another more shallow 30-by-60-foot teaching pool, the Chicago Tribune reports.

A yes vote means you think the Glen Ellyn Park District should borrow $13.5 million to construct the aquatic center while a no vote means you do not want to see plans for the pool move forward.

Those in favor of the pool say the pool should turn a profit by its second year though that would not cover the costs for its initial construction, according to the Chicago Tribune. They also say the pool would not cost taxpayers anymore since the aquatic center would be paid for through a tax levy that is set to expire.

Opponents question a need for the facility and say the referendum would increase taxes expected to decrease in 2018, which could mean taxpayers would pay $146 more in taxes, the Chicago Tribune reports.
