Warmer Temperatures Bring More Burglaries, Glen Ellyn Cops Warn

Nearly 90% of all burglaries in Glen Ellyn in 2017 were committed on unlocked cars.

GLEN ELLYN, IL — Glen Ellyn police have issued a warning to residents that warmer weather is likely to bring an increase in vehicle burglaries. Last year, nearly 90% of car burglaries in the village were committed on vehicles that had been left unlocked, according to police.

In 2017, vehicle burglaries roughly doubled from April to May, dipped slightly in June, and then steadily increased through September.

Since the majority of last year's car burglaries targeted unlocked cars, Glen Ellyn law enforcement is offering tips for vehicle owners to help prevent burglaries:

  • Always lock your car
  • Don't leave valuables in your vehicle
  • If you have valuables in your car, keep them out of sight
