GLENVIEW, IL — The Glenview Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed The Academy Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to Glenview with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The ribbon cutting took place May 21 at The Academy BJJ, located at 1730 Waukegan Road.
The school offers jiu jitsu instruction for kids and adults in what the business describes as a healthy, clean and safe environment. The Academy BJJ traces its lineage to founders and masters of jiu jitsu including Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos Gracie, Helio Gracie and Carlson Gracie, according to the business.
The Academy BJJ was founded by Professor Ashur Darmo, a 2nd-degree black belt who began training in jiu jitsu as a teenager. Darmo later trained and taught at KINGS MMA in California and also trained under Romulo Barral at Gracie Barra Northridge in Los Angeles, according to the business.
Darmo has competed at high levels in the sport, including winning a Pan American Championship and earning a ranking of No. 12 in the world in IBJJF Adult No-Gi by FloGrappling, according to The Academy BJJ.
The school moved to its Glenview location from a previous location in Winnetka.
