Children with autism spectrum disorders and Asperger's sometimes enter puberty two to three years earlier than their neurotypical peers. This phenomenon is called "precocious puberty," and can be worrisome to parents of children with Asperger's. These parents need to be aware of how hormone changes associated with puberty can affect their children, so they can best support their child through this time of change. Although this stage of development can be challenging to navigate, knowledge and preparation can help keep the guessing games at bay.
And sometimes, it's best to enlist the help of a mental health professional. If you are a parent of an adolescent with Asperger's and need a little extra support, please feel free to visit our website or call our office at (847) 730-3042. We are here for you and your child - let's connect!
