One resident lost $22,000 in a lottery scam, another gave $7,000 to fake federal agents on the Glenview police blotter, June 27–July 22

GLENVIEW, IL — The following information comes from the Glenview Police Department and court records as a record of police activity, including incidents reported by the public and those arrested by police. Criminal charges represent accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Every person arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

ROAD RAGE

  • A motorist in the 100 block of Harvard Lane reported at 5:46 p.m. on June 26 that an angry man had walked up to her parked vehicle and spat on it before walking away.
  • A motorist in the 1000 block of Waukegan Road reported around 12:30 p.m. on June 29 that he saw a driver arguing with another motorist. During the argument, one man reached into the trunk of his car and pulled out what the caller described as a black, semi-automatic handgun.
  • A driver in the 4500 block of West Lake Avenue reported around 2:30 p.m on July 15 that they got into a traffic dispute with another driver who got out of his car and threatened harm.

  • An employee in the 3900 block of Glenview Road reported suspicious Medicaid payments on a customer’s account at 3:15 p.m. on June 26. There was no reported loss to the business.
  • A Patriot Drive resident reported on June 27 a person purporting to be a federal agent called them and claimed their bank accounts had been compromised. The resident was out $7,000 after the phony fed instructed them to withdraw money and buy gift cards.
  • A Westview Road resident reported on July 1 he had paid $22,000 in fees as part of the lottery's "Mega Millions" game, believing he was going to receive a $5 million payout.
  • An employee in the 1100 block of Waukegan Road reported being defrauded out of $350 by a caller claiming to be a representative of Commonwealth Edison who told the employee an electric bill was delinquent and threatened to turn off the power if they did not receive immediate payment.
  • A Coral Lane resident reported on July 13 that they had been scammed out of $2,650 after getting messages on their computer claiming they had a computer virus and fraudulent bank charges. The screen then displayed a phony "Microsoft Security" message demanding the resident purchase gift cards.
  • An Ammer Ridge Court resident reported on July 16 they were tricked by a fake computer virus message into buying a $500 gift card and giving the serial number to a person on the phone.

ASSAULTS/BATTERIES

  • An employee in the 600 block of Milwaukee Avenue reported a fight with another employee around 10:30 a.m. on June 29.
  • A Greenwood Road resident reported at 12:07 a.m. on July 5 that they had broken up a fight while taking a walk. One of the people involved pushed the resident in the chest, identified himself as a member of the Latin Kings street gang and claimed he would "remember" their face. The resident called police after the incident but did not want to pursue charged.
  • A golfer at the Glenview Park Golf Club, 800 Shermer Road, became upset at another group of golfers around 3:45 p.m. on July 7 because they did not yell "fore" while hitting balls toward them. The golfer attacked the other group, tackling one of them and causing scratches to their arm and face before leaving the scene in a black SUV. Police were provided a video of the attacker.
  • A resident of the 1700 block of Greenwood Road reported around 1:45 a.m. on July 5 that six unidentified people had attacked him as he watched fireworks outside. The resident suffered injuries requiring a hospital visit but did not cooperate with officers, telling police he would "handle it himself."
  • An employee of a business in the 2000 block of Willow Road reported around 10 a.m. on July 9 that a customer spit in his face.
  • A North Branch Road resident reported around 1 a.m. on July 17 that a man they knew had gotten out of a car in the 1800 block of Tower Drive and punched him in the face several times before getting back into a car and driving away south.
  • A Chicago man visiting a friend in the 4500 block of Concord Lane reported an intoxicated man he knows grabbed him by the neck, pushed him against a wall and held a knife to his chest, telling him, "I could kill you if I wanted to." The man told police he suspects the knife-wielding man believes he is involved in a romantic relationship with his spouse.

THEFTS

  • A landscaping company employee in the 900 block of Indian Drive reported around 1 p.m. on June 27 that someone stole a leaf blower worth $700 from his trailer.
  • A resident in the 600 block of Hunter Road reported around 1:30 p.m. on June 30 that someone had stolen $20,000 worth of jewelry from a closet.
  • A resident in the 3300 block of Thornwood Avenue reported around 4 p.m. on July 1 someone had stolen an Apple laptop computer worth $1,000 from their home.
  • Someone stole an unlocked pink Schwinn bike from beside a garage in the 1800 block of Prairie Street between 9 and 11 a.m. on July 3.
  • Staff at a nursing home in the 3300 block of West Lake Avenue reported someone stole a patient's wallet that contained $480 at some point between noon and 5 p.m. on July 3.
  • Someone stole a Chicago Cubs license plate worth $150 from a car parked on Grove Street east of Church Street between 11:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on July 4.
  • A customer at Liquid Fusion, 3375 Milwaukee Ave., reported on July 4 that they had lost a $600 cell phone at the store on April 6. In response to messages sent to the lost phone, the customer told police they got a call from a person who said they would not return the stolen phone because they had paid $200 for it.
  • Someone stole $400 worth of American flag pins from the North Shore Country Club golf course between midnight and 7 a.m. on July 5.
  • A 9 mm pistol worth $500 was stolen from the truck of a Glenview resident's vehicle while they ran errands in Chicago on July 2 or July 3.
  • A hotel guest in the 2600 block of Lehigh Avenue reported around 7 p.m. on July 8 that someone had stolen $3,000 from his room.
  • Someone stole the front license plate off of a car parked in the 1600 block of Longmeadow Drive at some point prior to 10:30 a.m. on July 19.
  • An employee at a business in the 2500 block of Ravine Way reported around 1:15 p.m. on July 11 that another employee had stolen sets of drill bits worth $5,000.
  • Prescription drugs worth $40 were reported stolen from a home in the 2000 block of Avalon Court around 9:30 p.m. on July 12.
  • Someone stole a wallet and keys valued at $590 from a third floor closet at Glenbrook Hospital, 2100 Pfingsten Road, between 11:30 a.m. and noon on July 21.

SHOPLIFTING

  • An employee in the 2600 block of Tower Drive reported a two women or girls entered the store at 8:30 p.m. on June 27 and stole 25 pairs of black shorts valued at $1,100 a few minutes later before getting into a black Jeep Compass and driving away north on Tower Drive.
  • After someone stole 12 light bulbs from a record player console at the Salvation Army Store, 9840 Milwaukee Ave., the manager accepted $60 payment instead of pressing charges.
  • Staff at Target, 2241 Willow Road, discovered an employee under age 18 had failed to pay for $90 worth of food, cosmetics and clothing. The youth was cited with a violation of village code and released to a parent.
  • Staff at the Von Maur, 1960 Tower Drive, reported around 5:30 p.m. on July 7 that two men had stolen multiple bottles of perfume valued at $3,000. One man was described as 30 to 40 years old, 6 feet to 6 feet, five inches, weighing between 220 and 250 pounds and white. He had a goatee, numerous tattoos on both arms and was wearing a Chicago Cubs hat and polo shirt. The second man was described as 30 years old, between 5 foot, 8 inches and 6 foot, 2 inches, weighing between 190 and 220 pounds and white with a darker complexion than his companion. He was wearing a black hat, glasses and a black track jacket.
  • A 14-year-old girl stole $14 in clothing from a store in the 1900 block of Tower Drive was was issued a local ordinance citation and released to her mother.
  • A man stole two ribeye and two tuna steaks, valued at a combined $73,70, from the Marinaos, 25 Waukegan Road, around 5:45 p.m. on July 20, putting them into coat pocket after a cashier declined his credit card. Staff provided police with the shoplifter's license plate..

CRIMINAL DAMAGE

  • Officers dispatched by a burglar alarm around 4 a.m. on June 30 discovered someone smashed the back window of a business in the 1100 block of Milwaukee Avenue with a rock for a loss of $300.
  • Between 5 p.m. on July 3 and 6:30 a.m. on July 4, someone cut several strings of a $200 hammock hanging in a backyard in the 1400 block of Evergreen Terrace.
  • Fireworks are suspected of causing a dumpster fire at 11:11 p.m. on July 4 in the 3300 block of Milwaukee Avenue. It caused an estimated $100 in damage.
  • Someone scratched both sides of a car parked in the Costco parking lot at 2900 Patriot Blvd, doing $500 in damage, between noon and 1 p.m. on July 5. Before the incident the resident told police they had accidentally cut off another driver in a black pickup truck.
  • Someone spilled an unknown red substance on a car parked in the 1800 block of Tower Drive, causing an estimated $400 in damage.
  • Someone caused an estimated $500 in damage to a windshield of a car parked between 11 p.m. July 7 and 6:30 a.m. July 8 in the 1100 block of 11th Street.
  • A resident in the 900 block of Long Road reported on July 9 that someone scratched the passenger door of their vehicle between 6 p.m. on March 7 and 9:45 a.m. on March 8, causing $50 worth of damage.
  • A customer at a business in the 2900 block of Patriot Drive reported around 4:15 p.m. on July 15 that their car's window had been damaged after they dropped it off for service for a loss of $300.
  • A resident in the 1400 block of Woodlawn Avenue reported around 5:30 p.m. on July 15 that someone damaged their mailbox between 9 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. for a loss of $150.
  • Someone caused $300 in damage to a mailbox and post in the 2100 block of Mickey Lane between 5 p.m. on July 19 and 9 a.m. on July 20.
  • During the overnight hours of July 17 to July 18, someone ran through a badminton net in the backyard of a home in the 4600 block of Laurel Avenue, causing $80 in damage.
  • Someone broke the windshield wiper of a car parked in the 2500 block of Violet Street during the overnight hours of July 20 to July 21, causing an estimated $200 in damage.
  • A guest at an inn in the 1600 block of Milwaukee Avenue reported around 4:30 p.m. on July 21 that the father of their child, a New Jersey resident, had come to Chicago for a birthday and returned their iPad with a cracked screen. The damage was estimated at $200 and the New Jersey resident left by a ride-hailing car before officers arrived.
  • A Glenview Park District employee reported on the morning of July 22 that someone had spray painted words in blue, gold and white on the skate ramp at Community Park West, 1001 Zenith Drive, causing an estimated $300 in damage.

THREATS

  • An employee in the 1700 block of Milwaukee Avenue reported around 8 p.m. on July 1 that they had received threatening telephone calls.
  • A South Branch resident reported at 11:42 a.m. on July 3 that a man they knew had stopped at their home between midnight and 2 a.m. looking for a relative about a debt. The man threatened to "shoot up" the home and made gun gestures with his hand, police were told. Officers gave the man a warning and told him to stay away.
  • Glenview dispatchers fielded several calls on July 3 from a resident who asked for personal information about a specific person and made vulgar and sexually suggestive statements to emergency telecommunicators. Police spoke to the caller in person and warned him not to have contact with the person he was seeking information about and not to call dispatchers unless there is an actual emergency.
  • A resident of the 1100 block of 11th Street reported someone known to them drove past and pointed a black revolver at them around 7 p.m. on July 3. The resident did not wish to press charges.
  • A data collector for the U.S. Census Bureau reported around 4:30 p.m. on July 19 that a resident of 3100 block of Knollwood Lane refused to answer census questions and said, "Get off my property or I’m gonna grab a gun." The resident later told police he does not own a gun but wanted the census taker to leave. Police explained the statement constituted disorderly conduct but the census-taker did not wish to press charges

UNWANTED PEOPLE

  • An employee in the 1400 block of Waukegan Road reported around 10:30 p.m. on June 26 that a woman was acting strange inside the store. Police were told she was disturbing the other customers and mumbling nonsense.
  • An employee in the 1500 block of Wagner Road reported around 2:45 p.m. on July 1 that a woman had become irate and begun swearing.
  • A renter in the 1600 Robin Lane reported around 4:30 p.m. on June 26 that their landlord was in the residence without proper notice.
  • The owner of a building in the 2200 block of Sanders Road reported around 1:30 p.m. on July 2 that a tenant had come into their office requesting a second parking pass and refused to leave after their request was denied. Police warned the tenant they could face prosecution if they returned.
  • An intoxicated guest to made threats to hotel staff in the 1500 block of Milwaukee Avenue was asked to leave around 12:30 a.m. on July 13.

ARSON

  • Someone set fire to the bathrooms at Gallery Park, 2699 W. Lake Ave., shortly before 4 p.m. on July 6, charring the wall, thermostat and a toilet paper dispenser and causing $600 in damage.
  • A visitor discovered a smoke bomb had been set off in the women’s bathroom at Swenson Park, 901 Shermer Road, causing an estimated $200 in damage. Officers found a burn pattern on the floor and wall beneath the toilet paper dispenser.
  • Two men or boys lit a small pile of dried grass clippings on fire at the base of a tree at Cole Park, 1031 Kenilworth Lane, around 7:15 p.m. on July 8, causing an estimated $100 in damage.

FORGERY

  • A former employee at the Glenview Park Golf Club, 800 Shermer Road, was accused of altering checks twice between June 28 and July 3, successfully cashing one of them for a loss of $1,763.65.
  • An employee in the 1800 block of Elmdale Avenue reported around 7:30 p.m. on July 12 that someone had cashed $12,167.11 in fraudulent checks from their business' bank account.

UNDERAGE DRINKING

  • Police got a call about loud youth at Cole Park, 1031 Kenilworth Lane, around 12:15 a.m. on July 11. When they arrived, they found a 20-year-old man had wine and beer. He was ticketed for minor in possession of alcohol and released.
  • Police discovered a loud party in a backyard in the 800 block of Pleasant Lane following a noise complaint around 10 p.m. on July 10. Police reported eight people were "captured from the scattering horde," with seven aged 16 or 17 issued tickets for being minors in possession of alcohol.

TRESPASSING

  • During the overnight hours of July 5 to July 6, someone got into the Roosevelt Park Pool, 2239 Fir St., and broke a bottle near the lap pool. The pool had to be closed to make sure all the glass was taken out of the pool.
  • Police dispatched to a burglar alarm around 11 p.m. on July 12 at Avoca West School, 235 Beach Drive, found a window screen on the north side of the school had been removed.

DOG BITE
A patron of the dog park in the 1000 block of Zenith Drive reported at 6:45 p.m. on June 29 that they had been bitten by a dog while at the park.

STOLEN CAR
A resident in the 100 block of Lincoln Street reported their unlocked car was stolen from in front of their house with the key inside between 11 p.m. on July 11 and 9 a.m. on July 12. Chicago police reported on July 15 the car was discovered at automobile impound lot No. 2 in the Pullman neighborhood.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Irene Ampah, 32, of the 1700 block of Greenwood Road, Glenview, was arrested at 5:50 p.m. on June 26 at her residence and charged with child endangerment following an investigation into a report of children left home alone.

Robert Glorioso, 50, of the 400 block of Carlisle Court, Round Lake, was arrested at 4 a.m. on June 27 at the Glenview Police Department and charged with felony criminal damage to property after a charge related to an April 14 incident was upgraded by prosecutors.

Monali Shah, 43, of the 600 block of Tacoma Drive, Carol Stream, was arrested at 1:20 p.m. on June 27 at Von Maur, 1960 Tower Drive and charged with retail theft following an investigation into a reported theft from the store. Officers identified her as a suspect in a previous shoplifting incident.

Jimmy Karfis, 19, of the 4300 block of Forestview Drive, Northbrook, was arrested at 4:48 p.m. on June 28 at West Lake Avenue and Valor Drive and charged with leaving the scene of an accident. He was also issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, disobeying a traffic control device and failure to display a driver’s license following an investigation into a car crash at Patriot Boulevard and West Lake Avenue.

Randal Wolfinger, 46, of the 5600 block of Saint Louis Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 12:19 a.m. on June 29 in the 1100 block of Waukegan Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater after officers checked on a driver slumped over his steering wheel.

Daniel Ochab, 19, of the 3300 block of Springdale Avenue, Glenview, was arrested at 11:29 p.m. on June 30 in the 1500 block of Waukegan Road and charged with felony criminal damage to property in connection with an investigation into a damaged computer in the 1700 block of Waukegan Road.

Francisco Ruiz, 46, of the 500 block of 5th Street, Aurora, was arrested at 4:02 a.m. on July 3 in the 3800 block of Willow Road and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, due to at least two prior DUI convictions, following a traffic crash investigation at that location.

Nestor Bahena-Garcia, 31, of the first bock of South Branch, Northfield, was arrested at 1:18 p.m. on July 3 in the 2400 block of Waukegan Road and was charged with disorderly conduct after police reported he made threatening statements at that location. In April, he was arrested and charged with resisting Glenview police at a hotel in the 1500 block of Waukegan Road.

Francisca Bandera, 27, of the 800 block of Maple Lane, Wheeling, was arrested at 12:07 a.m. on July 4 after a traffic stop in the 1500 block of Milwaukee Avenue and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a BAC of 0.08 or above. She was also issued citations for driving without lights, speeding and improper lane usage.

Dimitri Gavriilopoulos, 29, of the 2500 block of Waterview Drive, Northbrook, was arrested at 1:58 a.m. on July 4 after a traffic stop in the 2700 block of Waukegan Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a BAC of 0.08. He was also ticketed for speeding.

Martinez Morales, 34, of the 9400 block of Bay Colony Drive, Des Plaines, was arrested at 2:45 a.m. on July 4 in the 2700 block of Waukegan Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding following a traffic stop in the 1200 block of Milwaukee Avenue.

Arielle Tripp, 19, of the 5800 block of North Glenwood Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 11:01 p.m. on July 4 in the 2100 block of Pfingsten Road and was charged with criminal trespassing after police reported she entered a property in the 700 block of Harms Road where she had been warned not to return.

Thomas Weber, 59, of the 2000 block of Wagner Road, Glenview, was arrested at 10:55 p.m. on July 4 in the 1800 block of Waukegan Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also issued a citation for improper lane usage.

Timothy Johnson, 61, and Amanda James, 49, both of the 7400 block of North Damen Avenue, Chicago, were arrested at 3:39 p.m. on July 5 at the Target, 2241 Willow Road. Johnson was charged with felony retail theft for police reported he stole $535.69 worth of merchandise. James was charged with misdemeanor retail theft after police reported she stole $99.99 worth of merchandise.

Matthew Davito, 39, of the 9200 block of Newcastle Avenue, Morton Grove, and Vitaliy Pavelko, 19, of the 600 block of Sutton Court, Wheeling, were arrested at 2:04 a.m. on July 12 in the 2700 block of Central Road and charged with reckless driving.

Eduardo Fradin, 34, of the 9600 block of Laramie Avenue, Skokie, was arrested at 3:28 a.m. on July 13 in the 5600 block of Old Orchard Road, Skokie, and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was also issued a citation for speeding.

Guillero Perez, 40, of the 5000 block of West 31st Place, Cicero, and Jonathan Storts, 28, of the 5300 block of West 26th Place, Cicero, were arrested at 3:35 p.m. on July 13 while walking in the 2900 block of West Lake Avenue and charged with felony retail theft following an investigation into the theft of over $2,100 worth of cologne from the Von Maur, 1960 Tower Drive. At the time of his arrest, Perez also had an active arrest warrant issued by Cicero police in connection with a drug possession charge. Storts was later charged with an additional count of retail theft stemming from a July 7 incident at the same store.

David Reyes, 37, of the 2000 block of New Castle Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 1:11 a.m. on July 20 and charged with domestic battery in the 1500 block of Lehigh Avenue.
